Jenn, Sib, Morgan and I made our way to Riverbend for some Train and John Mayer. Train's set was nice enough - although the singer doesn't sound quite as good live as on the radio. John came out looking about as bad as he possibly could (and I think it's tough for him to look bad) - white wifebeater, shaggy hair, red bandana, looking like a skinny, doped-up crack addict.
Personally, I was thoroughly surprised by his setlist. Most of the lawn crowd (where we were sitting) seemed disappointed in his choices, which included "Vultures," "Clarity," "Waiting on the World to Change," "Good Love is on the Way," and "Gravity." I was very excited that he chose to play "I Don't Trust Myself with Loving You" and "Why Georgia." He also did a number of songs from Battle Studies - including "Do You Know Me?," "Who Says?," "Perfectly Lonely," "War of my Life," and "Heartbreak Warfare." For his encore, he did an amazing mash-up of "Your Body is a Wonderland" and "Neon" followed by "Edge of Desire" (my favorite song from the new CD). He also did excellent covers of "Ain't No Sunshine," "Raspberry Beret," and "Don't Stop Believing." Although I loved the encore selection, I left feeling unsatisfied in his song choices.
He also didn't seem as funny as usual. This could be because he had to censor himself - Q102 was doing a live feed of the entire concert. Don't get me wrong. His guitar playing blew me away, his voice sounded great (although he messed with the melodies on most songs), and even John Mayer's ugliest is still pretty damn hot. However, I was somewhat disappointed in the show and I certainly rank it as my least favorite of the three J.May shows I've attended.
Remember when he used to be a precious, 'innocent' boy writing romantic lyrics in Atlanta? Although he has progressed into more sophisticated music and moved away from a sugary pop sound into more blues, funk, and jazz (which I prefer), something in his personality has changed, too. Somehow, over the years, he has become this crude, sexual deviant who would rather hear himself talk than put out the amazing music he is capable of creating. We have lost him to his inner struggles, inappropriate comments, arrogance, celebrity relationships, multiple tattoos, an unhealthy addiction to Twitter, and some awful haircuts. The man needs a therapist. Bad. Let's retrace his transformation:

I will always stand by him because he is one hell of a musician...but I must admit, I miss the old John sometimes.
