Happy Thoughts Thursday: Thanksgiving Edition

Happy Thanksgiving!

I know it's overstated, but I really do try to show my gratitude for those I love and the things I have year-round. This year, I'm especially thankful for my brother who is missing the holiday to serve our country. Although I miss him terribly, I couldn't be more proud of him.

On top of all the normal Thanksgiving things that are making me happy (family, food, football, Macy's Day Parade, Black Friday shopping, etc.), I also have some other happy thoughts.

- My mom. She came to the Cyclones game on Sunday to watch me at work. It was really cool to have her there so she could see what I do on game days. I feel so supported by my family and friends.

- The Hunger Games Trilogy. After seeing Catching Fire, I was reminded how awesome the books are and I'm tempted to re-read the series. Also, Jennifer Lawrence might just be my new girl crush.

- Sweet potatoes. So delicious. I'm attempting to make these sweet potato puffs for dinner tonight, so we'll see how it turns out. Fingers crossed.

- "Drink You Away" by Justin Timberlake. JT performed this on the AMAs on Sunday and I instantly fell in love with it.

Are you more of a Gale or Peeta fan?
What are you doing for Thanksgiving?

Birthday Perfection

My birthday isn't until Sunday, but my amazing boyfriend decided to surprise me early with his present. While watching Ellen on the couch yesterday, I got a phone call from Wheat telling me he was coming home early and to put on the dress I had been saving for a special night. Naturally, I was excited.

Twenty minutes later, he walked in the door with a dozen roses and I melted onto the floor.

I didn't have much time to enjoy the roses, though, because he rushed me out the door and into the car to make our dinner reservation on time. We drove downtown and, much to my surprise, our dinner reservation was at St. Elmo Steakhouse, easily the most famous and probably most expensive restaurant in Indianapolis.

The dinner surpassed my expectations. I had the filet mignon and garlic mashed potatoes. Wheat had the New York strip steak and french fries. Because it was my birthday, they gave me free dessert and I chose the white chocolate bread pudding with vanilla ice cream. We also tried the famous cocktail sauce, which has a pretty strong horseradish kick to it. All of the delicious food was topped off with big band and crooner music constantly being piped through the restaurant speakers. In other words, it was perfect.

Originally, we had planned to see a movie that night, so I was under the impression we would head straight to the theater after dinner. But sometime between the steak and the bread pudding, Wheat told me he didn't feel like seeing the movie. Dismayed, I asked why. He responded, "Because I think I'd rather do this" as he pulled tickets to Wicked out of his jacket pocket.

Again, I melted...if 'melted' is code for 'crying in public.'

After I embarrassed us both with my flash photography, we left dinner and headed straight to the Murat for the play. Our seats were great and, like last time I saw it, the show was absolutely amazing. I may or may not have cried during "Defying Gravity." Spoiler alert: I did.

As we ran walked to the car in the snow, I truly felt like a princess. Not because Wheat planned this wonderful, elaborate surprise or because he spent way more than he should have on me. I felt like a princess because this is how he makes me feel every single day. Between random texts telling me he believes in me, holding my hand on the couch while we watch TV, or how intently he listens to me when I need to talk, Wheat always makes me feel so loved, valued, and supported.

Although last night was perfect, it was just one night in a year of perfect nights I've spent with him...and the best gift of all is that he'll make me feel just as special tonight, tomorrow night, and every other night this year.

I love you, Wheat.

Hoosier Hockey!

Please allow the hockey nerd in me to briefly emerge.

It was announced this week that Indianapolis is getting an ECHL team, the Indy Fuel, next season! I can't wait! As a fan, I'm so beyond excited for the city. Geographically, Indianapolis is the perfect location for a team because it is surrounded by other teams in Cincinnati, Ft. Wayne, and Evansville. Also, even though most people don't know it, this city already has a rich hockey history. In fact, Wayne Gretzky made his professional debut in Indianapolis for the Racers of the then-World Hockey Association in 1978.

State Fairgrounds Coliseum will be renovated in time for next season.

I'm so excited that people in my adopted city will have a professional team in town again. Everyone should know how great this sport is and have the opportunity to watch it live. Side bonus: State Fairgrounds Coliseum, where the Fuel will play, is walking distance from my apartment!

Oh yeah - I saw Catching Fire yesterday and loved it. If you love the book, you'll love how true the movie adaptation is to it.

Happy Thoughts Thursday

- Work. I use the term 'work' loosely here, as I'm not getting paid, but my time with the Cyclones has been awesome so far. I'm learning so much, working on my writing, getting more practice working on a deadline, and oh yeah - I get to watch hockey for free. Games have been going into overtime and shootouts lately, which makes my job a lot tougher, but it's fun to be a part of something I love and I feel myself getting more confident with every game. Also, my story from Tuesday's shootout win ran on the Cincinnati Enquirer's webpage and I can't tell you how cool it felt to be published by a newspaper that used to show up on my family's doorstep every Sunday.

- Catching Fire. Yes, I'm one of those adults obsessed with the Hunger Games trilogy. Judge me all you want - it's awesome. I won't be seeing the movie at midnight (like I desperately want to), but I can't wait to see it early next week.

- Boots. Whoa. I had no idea how comfortable and cute books could be. I've been missing out all these years.

- The Penguins. They beat the Capitals tonight, 4-0, and it felt good. Really good. Also, Crosby scored the prettiest goal ever.

- Mix CDs. The radio is nice, but sometimes on my drives to Cincinnati, I just want to listen to hand-picked music.

- Wheat. I know it's sappy, but I don't care. I honestly never thought I could be this happy. Whether we're cuddling on the couch watching Top Chef, trying out a new restaurant in Broad Ripple, or reading to each other in bed, every second I spend with him feels perfect. I can't believe how lucky I am that he chose me.

- "Dark Horse" by Katy Perry ft. Juicy J. Please ignore Juicy J's horrible lyrics.

Who else can't wait for some fierce Katniss action this weekend?
Am I the only one who still burns CDs?

A wedding, mac & cheese bites, and some weird football.

Thanks to the Cyclones' recent schedule, I've spent the last week at home and it's been absolutely wonderful. Aside from spending time with my family, I also got to see one of dearest friends (and former college housemates) get married on Saturday. It was an afternoon wedding with a brunch reception and it was absolutely perfect. The decorations, the music, everything was so beautiful and so fitting for her. It was nice to see and catch up with most of my housemates again (they live all over the place now). Sarah looked absolutely gorgeous and I couldn't be happier for the newlyweds.

So very happy for them.

The original Central Perk crew minus Cara.
After the wedding, Wheat and I headed to Oxford so I could show him my beloved alma mater. We walked around on campus, scoped out the new buildings, and had dinner at Mac & Joe's. Mac & Cheese Bites - HOLLA! I wish more than anything that we could have gone to the Miami hockey game, but Wheat had to work an away game that night, so we headed home early.

Sunday, my parents surprised me with an early birthday present: Bengals vs. Browns tickets! So, Wheat and I headed down to Paul Brown Stadium, camera and ponchos in hand. Aside from the downpour in the third quarter, the game was perfect. Our seats were right on the 50-yard line and the Bengals won, 41-20. We also got to witness some of the most bizarre football I've ever seen, including a deflected punt, a blocked punt for a touchdown, a forced fumble (that resulted in a touchdown) by Vontaze Burfict, and the coolest kick/interception by James Harrison. We also saw wide receiver Mohamed Sanu throw a perfect pass to Giovani Bernard. Weirdest game ever.

Just a little rainy.

Hear that Bengal growlin'...

Can I get a Who-Dey?!
We also witnessed history because the 31 points the Bengals scored in the second quarter set a new franchise record for most points scored in a quarter. Woo!

Wheat decided to stay the night and drive home on Monday morning, so we ate dinner and watched The Walking Dead with my family - a perfect end to a wonderful weekend.

Happy Thoughts Thursday

I'm still experiencing withdrawal symptoms from our trip to Gatlinburg, but no worries - I still have plenty of reasons to smile.

- Home. The Cyclones have a couple home games this week, so I'm back home in Cincinnati for the weekend. Also, one of my favorite people (who also happens to be one of my college housemates) is getting married on Saturday and I can't wait to share her special day with her!

- Indiana Pacers. As I've already mentioned, I'm not remotely a basketball fan. However, my wonderful boyfriend gives me free tickets to games all the time (not a bad perk), so I've pretty much become the team's secondary mascot. It must be working because the Pacers are the only undefeated team in the NBA with a perfect 8-0 record. Unfortunately, the most recent win came at the expense of the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night, which makes this more of a bittersweet thought than a happy thought, I suppose.

Morgan didn't heckle me for wearing a Grizzlies shirt.

Netflix. Whoa. I've always known that I had access to Netflix, but I've never really taken advantage of it until recently. Wheat and I have slowly been making our way through Friday Night Lights (which I love), but we also just watched a movie (Goon) and I think that will be our new go-to on boring nights at home.

- My brother. I didn't post anything about Veteran's Day on Monday, but I can honestly say I think about the troops every single day. Why? Because my handsome little brother is a United States Marine and is currently deployed overseas. This will be our first holiday season without him and we're still struggling with that, but we couldn't be more proud of him and what he's doing. He truly is one of my happiest thoughts every week.

- Cookies and cream ice cream. Requires absolutely no explanation.

- "Give Me Love" by Ed Sheeran. Mmm...his voice. It totally melts me and I love this song. Also, the only contestants worth talking about on X Factor, Alex and Sierra, sang this as a beautiful duet last week. I'm not a huge fan of the video, but here it is.

What's making YOU happy this week?
Do you have a favorite NBA team? Would you like to go to a Pacers game with me?
Do you actually enjoy X Factor this season?

Gatlinburg Trip

This weekend, some of my best friends from high school (15 of us in total) ventured down to Gatlinburg for our second annual trip to the Smoky Mountains. Like last time, it was crazy, exhausting, and a total blast.

We stayed in a huge chalet up in the mountains, which made the drive a little scary, but the gorgeous view was worth it. We had three levels, a hot tub, a game room (with air hockey, a pool table, and an awesome arcade video game with Pac-Man, Frogger, etc.), and a gas fireplace.

He was the definitive Pac-Man champ of the weekend.

On Friday morning, we went downtown for breakfast at Gatlinburg's Pancake Pantry. Although it wasn't quite as good as Nashville's, it was still so delicious. After breakfast, we walked down the strip and stopped for some moonshine tasting and bluegrass music at Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine.

Blackberry was my favorite.
On Saturday, a group of us went to get barbeque for lunch. I also tried this delicious cherry soda called Cheerwine. Has anyone else had this? I wish they sold it everywhere. After lunch, Wheat, Ben, Emily, and I decided to explore the national park. We opted to go on a 2.6-mile round-trip hike to see Laurel Falls. The way there was mostly uphill, but the pay-off was really nice.

Somehow, those two made it.
That night, we met everyone downtown for one last dinner at Smoky Mountain Brewery. Wheat and I followed that up with some deep-fried Oreos. We're addicted.

Mostly, we spent the entire weekend inside the cabin, hanging out, playing games, and catching up with some of the best people I've ever known. Now, I'm completely exhausted, but wishing I was still there. I really am the luckiest girl.

Happy Thoughts Thursday

I have more than enough happy thoughts this week.

- Gatlinburg trip! A big group of my high school friends are going to Gatlinburg for a long weekend retreat in a mountaintop cabin. We did the same thing last year and I had such a blast. Expect a detailed recap early next week.

- Apple cider. I still have a gallon from Iron's Fruit Farm and I'm taking my sweet time finishing it.

- The Voice. I can't get over how good the contestants are this season. I also can't believe that America can only choose one winner. I'm really digging Matthew Schuler and Ray Boudreaux, but it won't be long before I'm borderline-devastated by some of the eliminations.

- Visitors. On Saturday, my sister and her boyfriend came to see the new apartment and accompany me to the Pacers vs. Cavaliers game. Yesterday, my friend Sam came to visit and after a delicious dinner at Bru Burger, we ended up at the Pacers vs. Bulls game. Apparently, I'm becoming a mascot of sorts for the home team. I'm not above using free tickets as bribes for visitors. You've been warned.

Love them too much.
- I Wear the Black Hat by Chuck Klosterman. Lately, Wheat and I have been reading it aloud to each other and I think it's the perfect way to spend quality time together without staring at a screen of some sort. It's also nice to have someone to reflect with - it's like we have our own little book club. Bonus perk: The book is really interesting, too.

- "Starry Eyed" by Ellie Goulding. I've loved her for some time now, but something about the chilly weather makes me inexplicably love her even more.

What's making YOU happy this week? Have a great weekend, loves.

Working on You.

Let me start by saying this: I’m a hopeless romantic who has always stated that all I want in this life is to love fiercely and be loved equally. I stand firmly by that statement, but for the longest time, I genuinely believed that the instant I found a loving boyfriend, all the rest of my problems would vanish.

This line of thinking is troubling for several reasons.

First, I’m a rational thinker, a logical person. Why I thought the addition of a singular human being to my life would eradicate all my other grievances is beyond me. What does a boyfriend have to do with struggling to pay for groceries, getting over my phobia of flu shots, accidental car wrecks, or the DVR not recording Cupcake Wars? Absolutely nothing.

Second, I spent so much energy focusing on my love life (or lack thereof) that it’s no wonder I had other problems. Even in hindsight, I don’t blame myself for wanting to meet the right guy, wanting to fall head-over-heels in love, and having that love be reciprocated. I don’t blame that often lonely, perpetually-single or mistreated version of myself for wanting true love when seemingly the rest of the world had already found it. But, if I’m being completely honest (and this isn’t easy to admit), I worried about it and cried about it…way. too. much.

Finally, I’ve realized that you can’t find answers in someone else. The cure to all of your emotional ailments - heartache, disappointment, sadness, anger, frustration – ultimately lies within you and how you choose to deal with things.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m currently the happiest I’ve ever been. The moment Wheat walks through the door after work is the best part of my day and I’m thankful for his wit, his smile, his hugs, and his heart every single day. In a lot of ways, I was right. He was worth every heart break, every “just friends” response, every tear, and every second of the wait. Finding true, reciprocated love is everything I wanted it to be and so much more…

But, girls (and guys), I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t solve every problem. You’ll still apply for jobs you won’t get. You’ll still gain ten pounds and hate dragging yourself to the gym. You’ll still cry because you miss your mom and your best friend. You’ll still stub your toe, somehow burn pancakes, and struggle to keep in touch with friends. You get the picture.

Yes, it’s nice to have someone who loves you and wants to help you through that stuff (and in another moment of honesty, I can truly say that Wheat does more than his fair share of the heavy-lifting in my life…and no, that is not a fat joke). But long before I had Wheat to tell me he loved me, I had my best friend, my sister, my brother, and my parents to tell me. They were the unpaid therapists in my life, listening to me complain, making calls on my behalf, sticking up for me, and putting up with me unconditionally. They still do.

So, I guess what I’m trying to say is you control how you deal with things - not your boyfriend, your best friend, your mom, or your mailman. My problems haven’t magically disappeared just because I’m madly in love. Neither will yours. You might have someone to hold your hand through it, but you probably already have that somewhere in your life.

Working on yourself and trying to be a better version of yourself is the best way to make things happen. I know it seems strange, but the only way to get rid of the bad in your life is to focus on the good and try to be better. Easier said than done, I know.

The instant I decided to focus on myself, follow my dreams, and work toward the life I wanted, things started to change for me. I left my parents’ house in a complete funk, disappointed in myself and completely lost. I moved to a new city where I knew almost no one, started graduate school, and thrust myself into something completely unfamiliar, in hopes that I’d find out I liked it. Luckily, I did.

The longer I worked at it, the more independent, motivated, happy, and healthy I felt. Taking charge of my situation didn’t fix all of my problems, but it certainly kick-started the process.

So, after years of crying over the wrong guys and desperately wanting to find the right one, I decided to focus on me. I decided to make myself a priority and worry about things that were actually under my control. And just when I finally started to feel better about myself, I met Wheat.

Coincidence? I think not.

But the same concept still applies. I always remind myself that it's not Wheat's job to fix my life (although he often does). I'm still in charge of my own happiness and the better I feel about myself, the better he feels and the better we are together.

So, Brittany (and others), stop looking to others for answers. You've likely got them right in front of you.

Halloween Creepy (Bar) Crawl

Last night, Wheat, Jenn, Kelly, and I embarked on a four-hour bar crawl in downtown Indianapolis. Although I don't drink, I still had an amazing time...and that's all the reason I need to dress up for Halloween.

Wheat and I were Blue and Steve from Blue's Clues. Jenn was the devil. Kelly was a goth.

Sitting in his thinking chair and thinking.
They're pretty. Ugh.
When we checked in at Sensu (which might have been my favorite bar), we got wristbands and five drink tickets each (good for one free drink at each bar on the crawl). Bud Light, Southern Comfort, and Bacardi sponsored the event, so those were the only options for the tickets. Luckily for me, I didn't have to twist too many arms to share my tickets.

Too bizarre not to include in this post.
We spent about 40 minutes at each bar before moving on to the next one. All the bars (Sensu, Blu, Social, Ike & Jonesy's, and Tiki Bob's Cantina) had different DJs and drink specials. Sensu and Blu were even playing a montage of clips from different classic horror movies. I loved it.

Most of the costumes were about what you would expect for this year: Half-naked girls. Breaking Bad. Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke. Duck Dynasty. My favorite of the night was Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead, complete with his very own crossbow. I also really liked an older couple that dressed as Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers.

Speaking of half-naked girls, we literally saw a half-naked girl. She was dressed (I use the term "dressed" very loosely here) up as Poison Ivy and was only wearing green underwear. She was completely naked up top and walking around the bars covered only in green paint. I was completely shocked, but after some research, we found out that it's legal for girls to be topless. No, thanks.

My exact sentiments after the Bengals game. My friends were clearly supportive.
Aside from the constant rain, a disappointing Bengals overtime loss (that ended with a Dolphins' safety and an ACL tear for Geno Atkins), and an unfortunate dress + wind mishap on my part (that I refuse to speak about), the night was a total success. The best part? Thanks to Living Social, we only paid $7.50 a person (plus tips) for the whole night.

This holiday just never seems to disappoint. I'm already counting down the days to next Halloween.
