The Best of Vince Vaughn

Recently, one of my favorite bloggers, Helene in Between, made a Definitive Ranking of Zac Efron Movies and it inspired me to make a list of my own. I consider myself to be a bit of a Vince Vaughn connoisseur, so without further ado, I bring you:

Swingers

If you haven't seen Swingers, do yourself a solid and watch it. This is vintage Vaughn through and through. Plenty of the quick-wit, fast-talking, charming banter and monologues that you've come to expect from him, but without the cheesy, forced feeling of his recent movies. This is honestly one of my favorite movies of all time and his real-life friendship with Jon Favreau shines through in every scene.

Wedding Crashers

Let's be real: This is Vince Vaughn at his absolute best. You get the sense that most of the dialogue between Vince and Owen Wilson was improvised, a natural rapport that he has tried (and failed) to replicate ever since.

Old School

For me, Old School kicked off the Frat Pack craze of the 2000s, when each comedy tried desperately to top the last with raunchy hilarity. It's nice to go back and watch Vince, Will, and Luke Wilson lay the groundwork before ushering in the era of Judd Apatow.

The Break-Up

A perfect combination of funny and endearing, silly and serious. Unlike most of his prior movies, The Break-Up is realistic, hitting a bit too close to home for some couples. Although it was tough to contain my jealousy, I also loved Vince's brief fling with Jennifer Aniston. I mean, if I can't have him, it might as well have been Jen.

A Cool, Dry Place

You've likely never heard of this movie and that's probably because the plot is nothing groundbreaking. It is refreshing, however, to see Vince tackle a serious role and he completely melts my heart as single dad Russell Durrell. Oh, I should also mention that he used to look like this:

Honorable Mentions: Jurassic Park: The Lost World - I bet you didn't realize/remember he played a major role in the blockbuster sequel. Into the Wild - I really love this movie, but Vince is hardly in it, so I can't count it. Anchorman - The same is true here: So great, but too little Vince to count. Rudy - Speaking of too little Vince, did you know that Vince plays the quarterback in Rudy? The breeding ground of a beautiful friendship with Favreau.

What's your favorite Vince Vaughn movie?

Michael Buble and a Triple Feature.

On Saturday night, Wheat and I finally made it out to Tibbs Drive-In Theater. He had never been to a drive-in before, so I figured it would be the perfect date night. We bought our tickets on Sweet Jack, so we had two adult admissions and a large popcorn for $10. It ended up being the best deal ever because we stayed for a triple feature.

The movies were great. My favorite was Lee Daniels' The Butler. Forest Whitaker plays Cecil Gaines, a White House butler who served under eight presidents. In addition to his duties at the White House, Gaines also balances an overwhelming family life, complete with an alcoholic wife (played by Oprah Winfrey) and an outspoken son who is active in the civil rights movement. To me, the movie was very reminiscent of Forrest Gump, in that it used a somewhat ordinary character as the lens through which American history is seen. The juxtaposition between servile, obedient, and apolitical Gaines and his rebellious, politically-motivated son allows the audience to watch the progression of the civil rights movement throughout much of the 20th century. On top of all of that, the movie is based on the incredible real life of butler Eugene Allen, who served in the White House from the Eisenhower administration until he retired during the George H. W. Bush years. I highly suggest it to anyone who likes history, if for no other reason than to laugh at the all-star cast they chose to play the presidents.

Next, we watched Fruitvale Station, the heart-rending true story of the last day of Oscar Grant's life. In what seemed to be a Trayvon Martin-type situation, Grant, a 22-year-old father, boyfriend, and son, was killed in 2008 by a police officer at the Fruitvale BART station in San Francisco. The movie was heartbreaking, but definitely worth watching. You've been warned, though. It's so depressing.

In order to cheer up after Fruitvale Station, we watched We're the Millers, which was about what you'd expect. It was pretty funny and let's be real: Everyone likes Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston.

On Sunday, my parents came into town because Wheat got us four tickets to see Michael Buble at Bankers Life Fieldhouse! This was my third time seeing him and he was just as entertaining as always. He played a great balance of original songs and covers, new songs and old. He was just as funny as ever, interacted with the crowd, and even made fun of Justin Bieber during one of his extended commentaries.

His set has gotten much more elaborate and fun to watch since the first time I saw him. He even had fireworks this time. His band also slides around to different positions on stage, depending on the song.

It was also the third time I've seen Naturally 7 open for him and they never cease to amaze me. Seriously, if you don't listen to anything else I say, check them out. They sing everything a cappella and simulate different instruments with their voices, which they call "vocal play." They played "Wall of Sound," Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love," and "Fingertips" by Stevie Wonder. However, my favorite was their beautiful rendition of Coldplay's "Fix You."

At one point, Buble and Naturally 7 came out to a stage right in front of our section to sing a medley of Motown songs. It was glorious.

Here is the setlist:

Fever
Haven't Met You Yet
Try a Little Tenderness
You Make Me Feel So Young
Moondance - LOVE
Come Dance with Me
Feeling Good
I've Got the World on a String
Everything
That's All
Close Your Eyes
How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?
Home

From the stage near us:

Get Lucky - Daft Punk cover!
Who's Loving You
I Want You Back
To Love Somebody

Back on the main stage:

All You Need is Love
Burning Love
It's a Beautiful Day

Encore:

Cry Me a River
Save the Last Dance for Me
A Song for You - My favorite ever. He always closes with this and sings the last verse with no microphone. It's incredible.

Aside from some of the songs, the only major difference I noticed between this concert and the other two was that I was more interested in the guy next to me than the guy on stage. What a nice change.

Man Meat (Pretend It's) Monday #41

I have a really awesome blogger meet-up to tell you about and I promise I will soon. However, I figure if I'm actually feeling inspired, I should do what I do best - which is talk about male celebrities, of course.

Thomas Sadoski

I promise he doesn't always cross his arms.

Claim to Fame: Actor (The Newsroom, 30 Beats, Broadway and Off-Broadway)

Birthday: July 1, 1976

There are few things in this life that I love more than HBO. Over the years, it has provided me with some of my favorite shows, including Entourage, Real Time with Bill Maher, Hard Knocks, 24/7, Boardwalk Empire, and True Blood. Most recently, it introduced me to my newest TV addiction, The Newsroom.

Confession: I'm a political science nerd. I'm sure it would bore most people even more than hockey, so I try not to blog about it often. However, I was a political science major in college, am extremely passionate about our country's democratic institutions, and spend an embarrassing amount of time reading the 'Politics' section of CNN. I took a number of Media & Politics classes at school and I'm enthusiastic about an informed citizenry. (But seriously, can we please put a limit on the endless campaign commercials? I'm going to pull out my hair.) Combine political topics and current events with The Social Network's Aaron Sorkin and I'm hooked.

Then, HBO decided to add Thomas Sadoski to the mix.

In fact, with actors like Dev Patel and John Gallagher Jr., the entire male cast is practically a deli of Man Meat. Thomas Sadoski, however, is my favorite. His brilliant portrayal of News Night's former executive producer, Don Keefer, perfectly straddles the line between utterly unlikeable and strangely relatable. He plays the show's "antagonist" with a finesse that almost leaves you rooting for him.

Also, THOSE LIPS.

Photobucket

Random Tidbit: He was once Mark Ruffalo's understudy in an Off-Broadway production of This is Our Youth.

Only downfall?: Still searching. I'll get back to you.

Today, I told him how much I appreciate his acting prowess on Twitter. He responded. *swoon*

I'm taking it as a compliment that I got more than a simple, "Thank you!"

So, readers: It's your turn. Could you focus with those lips telling you how Citizens United has changed the political landscape?

Me either...and I actually find it interesting.

Man Meat Monday #40

If Fifty Shades of Grey is "Mommy porn," then True Blood is porn for the 20-something-year-old girl. So, this week, I present to you True Blood's newest slice of Man Meat...

Scott Foley

Claim to Fame: Actor (Scream 3, Felicity, Grey's Anatomy)

Birthday: July 15, 1972

I can't find much information on Mr. Foley, but luckily, with a face like that, I don't need any. Ever since Scream 3, I've had a serious weakness for Scott Foley. So, when he suddenly appeared in the Season 4 finale of True Blood, I felt like the heavens opened up to rain even more manly goodness on me.

Random Tidbit: He speaks Japanese fluently.

Only downfall?: He's not in anything. Guest appearances on random TV shows aren't even close to satisfying my craving.

Although I'm not sure how I feel about his sketchy character on True Blood yet, I am sure of one thing: Congratulations on your face, Mr. Foley.

So, readers: It's your turn. Can the cast of True Blood get any more attractive?

Really, they are one Channing Tatum away from being the Magic Mike re-cast of my dreams.

Man Meat Monday #39

My newest celebrity crush?

Robert De Niro between 1973-1985.

Claim to Fame: Actor (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas)

Birthday: August 17, 1943

There isn't much to say about Mr. De Niro that hasn't been said already. He is the oldest honoree in Man Meat history and is widely recognized as one of the greatest actors in American cinematic history. In the last week, I've watched Raging Bull twice and Taxi Driver four times. Something must be wrong with me because I would take De Niro over Ryan Reynolds, Bradley Cooper, or Ryan Gosling anyday.

However, I'm not too surprised by this development. De Niro looks pretty similar to a former Man Meat Monday honoree.

Random Tidbit: De Niro once held the record for most weight gained for a role when he gained 60 pounds to play an older Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull.

Only downfall?: This is the year 2012.

So, readers: It's your turn. Are you talkin' to him?

Man. I have good taste.

When American Idol drives you to the brink of insanity...

Again, I know I've been a horrible blogger, but I really need to get something off my chest.

Disclaimer: I really like Phillip Phillips from American Idol. How could I not? He's a carbon copy of my favorite artist of all-time. He's incredibly talented, plays the type of music I love most, and have you seen him? Yum.

That being said - I have a few problems with the reaction to Phillip Phillips.

1. Every single time that Randy Jackson or Jennifer Lopez tell him that he's original, a piece of my soul dies. It just shrivels and dies. I'm not trying to knock Phillip down or detract from his talent, but let's get real. Aside from his two Usher covers and "Thriller," I haven't seen anything original. At all. He is, for lack of a better description, a younger version of Dave Matthews. The mannerisms, the voice, the dancing, everything. I would know.

Tonight, when he did "Time of the Season," I nearly threw up.

I think we all know which version is better.

2. I know quite a few people who love Dave, but I know WAY more people who absolutely hate him. I do mean hate him. I've never been able to understand this and I've received an enormous amount of criticism from my friends for being such a DMB superfan. As I said, TONS of people love Dave Matthews Band. They tour every summer, their concerts sell out, their albums do well, and their fans are fiercely loyal. However, so many people can't stand Dave's voice or the jam band type of music. DMB's music is rarely heard on the radio, they hardly receive any critical praise. So, someone please explain to me the overwhelming support that Phillip Phillips has received on American Idol. Phillip has never been voted into the bottom three on the show. Why is the country embracing him when so often they reject DMB? SOMEONE TELL ME. IT KEEPS ME UP AT NIGHT.

At any rate, I hope Phillip wins (or Joshua Ledet - who blows my mind every week). Maybe, just maybe, Dave and Phillip could collaborate?

Lord knows I'd be first in line.

Man Meat Monday #37

Like the rest of America, I fangirled over saw The Hunger Games this weekend. Although the age-old adage of "The book was better" remains true, I thought the movie was great. It stayed remarkably close to the book and, aside from the ridiculous, sporadic cheering from the audience, I really loved it. The casting, in particular, was pretty close to perfect.

So, for this week's installment of Man Meat Monday, I thought I'd bring you the most aesthetically pleasing part of the casting...

Liam Hemsworth

Claim to Fame: Actor (The Last Song, The Hunger Games)

Birthday: January 13, 1990 (The very first slice of Man Meat born in the '90s - we're getting old, friends)

Even without seeing the cast, I was on Team Gale. Let's be honest. There is something irresistible about a motivated, rogueish revolutionary that hangs out in the woods. However, after seeing Mr. Hemsworth, any lingering doubts in the Peeta/Gale debate were dashed. Hello, Liam. Congratulations on your face.

Here's what you need to know about him: He's from Melbourne, Australia (he has the accent to match the face). He's 6'3". He is the younger brother of Thor (AKA Chris Hemsworth). There must be something in the Australian water.

Random Tidbit: He auditioned for the role of Thor before it was eventually awarded to his brother.

Only downfall?: He's dating Miley Cyrus. I'm not a fan.

You want to hear his voice. Trust me.

So, readers: It's your turn. You'd much rather be in that cave with Gale than Peeta. Real or not real?

2nd Annual March Manness Tournament!

The moment has finally arrived for the unveiling of the March Manness results!

You will be shocked to find that, of the 11 participants, absolutely no one had the same winner in their bracket. I guess we all have very different taste. Since there was no grand winner in the tournament (and a couple people cheated a bit), I will share some patterns I noticed with you:

- The celebrities with the most appearances in your FOXY Four were Ryan Gosling (5), Adam Levine (5), Leonardo DiCario (4), and Gerard Butler (4).

- No one likes athletes...except for me. Aside from my bracket, David Beckham was the only athlete that made it into anyone's EROTIC Eight. That's fine. MORE FOR ME.

- I am relieved to announce that Justin Bieber didn't make the cut for anyone's FOXY Four.

- Every celebrity advanced out of their initial match-up in at least one bracket.

- One guy, my dear friend Max, participated in the March Manness tournament. Will Ferrell won his bracket. Another close guy friend expressed his disgust that I could ever pair David Beckham with Patrick Dempsey. (I should mention that, unlike last year, I didn't seed this year's celebrities)

First, here is my bracket:

Winner: Tim Tebow

Click 'Read More' for everyone else's brackets! I'm sorry they are so hard to read - I'm not sure how to make them bigger. Thank you SOOO much for playing, ladies (and gentleman)! Let's be honest - hot guys are always more fun than collegiate basketball.

Thursday, March 15, 2012

March Manness 2012

As you probably know, I love sports. Despite my best efforts, however, I cannot get into basketball - collegiate or NBA. So, every year around this time, I fill out a March Madness bracket, in hopes that I'll pay attention to the tournament and feel invested in some teams. I never do.

Last year, I decided to have some fun with a blank March Madness template. I've decided to do it again, but this time, YOU make the choices.

I bring you - The Second Annual March Manness Tournament.

I tried to choose universally appealing (or at least popular) male celebrities. I also tried to include actors (movie and television), musicians, and athletes. You'll be relieved to find that none of my major obsessions made the bracket (except for Tebow and Phelps). This means no hockey players, no politicians, and no goofy, tall guys. Unfortunately, it means Justin Bieber, Bradley Cooper, and Patrick Dempsey.

So, here's the plan. You fill out your bracket. I'm sorry I can't make it any bigger on my blog, but there is much bigger one on my Facebook. You can print it, then take a picture of it and send it to me. You can post it on your own blog. You can even just tell me who wins each stage in an e-mail, tweet, comment, or facebook message. I'll fill out the bracket for you!

On Monday, I will post all the brackets I've received (and my own) and we'll see if there is a clear winner!

Let's take objectifying men to the next level. Good luck!

In case you aren't sure who these people are:

Left side: George Clooney, Josh Duhamel, Robert Downey Jr., John Mayer, Johnny Depp, Ben Affleck, Tim Tebow, Ryan Reynolds, Ryan Gosling, Zac Efron, Jake Gyllenhaal, Bradley Cooper, Justin Timberlake, Channing Tatum, Patrick Dempsey, David Beckham

Right side: Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson, Gerard Butler, Adam Levine, Justin Bieber, Matt Damon, Enrique Iglesias, James Franco, Mark Wahlberg, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Eric Dane, Paul Walker, Colin Farrell, Drake, Michael Phelps

Saturday Night Love You

For as long as I can remember, I have loved Saturday Night Live. Even during the "lost years," when absolutely no one thought it was funny, I loved it.

Of course, I wasn't alive to witness the genius of SNL greats like John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, and Bill Murray, but some of my very first TV memories include Adam Sandler playing guitar, Dana Carvey's Church Lady, and Chris Farley's hilarious screaming.

The older I got, the more I loved it. I watched as my favorite cast members gradually left and were replaced by new favorites. I laughed hysterically at Chris Kattan, wished I could do 'Weekend Update' with Norm Macdonald or Amy Poehler, and imitated Tracy Morgan's Brian Fellow and Will Ferrell's Harry Caray until I thought my parents might kick me out of the house.

Every year, I sign up for SNL tickets (Newsflash: They are nearly impossible to get) and last time I went to New York, I toured the NBC studios to see the hallowed ground itself. As embarrassing as it is to admit, I got pretty choked up seeing all the cast memorabilia and pictures.

Although their sketches are pretty hit or miss, I really love the current cast. Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig are truly two of the most hysterical people on the planet...and don't even get me started on my obsession crush on Andy Samberg.

...but before there was Andy Samberg, there was Jimmy Fallon.

Sometimes, when I watch his new late night show, I get so disappointed. I start to forget how flawless he used to be. The way he'd muss up his hair, the schoolboy giggling, the hilarious song parodies, the adorable interplay with Tina Fey on 'Weekend Update,' the Boston accent in the 'Denise and Sully' skits, the nervous biting of the lower lip while smiling. Resistance was futile every Saturday night.

For about five years, spanning middle school and the beginning of high school, I kinda thought that if I couldn't marry Tom DeLonge from Blink 182 or Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day (yeah, I was one of those kids), I was absolutely going to marry Jimmy Fallon. Then, he was gone and with him, my SNL-loving heart.

...but the year after Jimmy left, Andy Samberg arrived...and instead of growing up and coming to terms with the fact that I wasn't going to marry an SNL cast member, I started thinking up ways to get into Andy's (digital) shorts.

So, this season, when Jimmy Fallon hosted SNL and made his long-awaited return to the place where he once fueled my hilarious-and-attractive-boy-next-door-fantasies, I thought I might die. Then, he teamed up with Andy Samberg as his reflection, mussed up his hair, and sang "The Rainbow Connection" and I did.

Man Meat Monday #36

I'll be honest. I want to brag about Evgeni Malkin for Man Meat Monday. He had a natural hat trick in the Pens' 6-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning today. I want to fangirl, post pictures of him shirtless, and hypothesize on his lovemaking methods.

But, I also love my readers. So, I'll do something a little different this week.

The Golden Globes were tonight. Here were my main thoughts: I love Ricky Gervais (although he was a bit too tame for my taste this year). I need to see some of these movies before the Oscars, especially The Artist. Angelina Jolie could stand to eat a sandwich (or 700). Cut your hair, Gerard Butler. Meryl Streep was drunk. Why can't I be Kate Winslet? The relationship between George Clooney and Brad Pitt melts my soul. Madonna can (and probably will) kick my ass. Where was Ryan Gosling? Why can't I be Tina Fey?

So, ladies and gentlemen, I will provide you with a full deli this week. Which celebrity stole your heart on the red carpet?

Adam Levine, Mark Wahlberg, Joseph Gordon Levitt? Ewan McGregor, Clive Owen, Bradley Cooper? Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Fassbender? Colin Firth, Channing Tatum, George Clooney? Hard choice, I know.

Of course, George Clooney gets me. If he's too obvious of a choice, I'd go with Colin Firth or Adam Levine. They're all attractive...

...but man. I'd drink Evgeni Malkin's bathwater.

Man Meat Monday #32

It’s Halloween and I’ve got an appropriate slice of Man Meat for you. Pun intended – he really might be man meat soon.

I’ve been drooling over this week’s honoree like that one snack-size Snickers bar you get while Trick-or-Treating. Seriously though, why did everyone hand out those nameless, disgusting orange and black candies? Even fifty of those things don’t provide enough leverage for a good candy trade.

Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t seen the most recent episode of The Walking Dead and you don’t want me to ruin it for you, stop reading now. You can still enjoy the pictures.

Jon Bernthal

Claim to Fame: Actor (The Walking Dead, The Pacific)

Birthday: September 20, 1976

Holy hell. Within four days, I’ve seen every episode of The Walking Dead and I’m totally obsessed. The show itself is awesome. It’s creepy, it’s equal parts thriller and character drama, and it satisfies my interest in the human condition by exploring important themes, like morality, religion, and relationships. Then, on a completely shallow level, it gives me Shane Walsh.

Shane Walsh is portrayed by the talented Jon Bernthal. In complete honesty, he is an acquired taste. At first glance, I wasn’t remotely attracted to him. However, as the episodes progressed, his acting became more impressive and his character more complex. Then, he took off his shirt. Brittany – 0. Bernthal – 1.

Internet research tells me that Jon Bernthal is from Washington, DC, he went to Skidmore College, then studied at the School of Moscow Art Theater. While in Moscow, he played professional baseball in the European Professional Baseball Federation. As if the idea of Mr. Bernthal as a professional athlete isn’t attractive enough, he was then invited by the director of Harvard’s Institute for Advanced Theater Training to get his Master’s in Fine Arts at the American Repertory Theater. So, he did.

Random Tidbit: He is married to the niece of professional wrestler Kurt Angle.

Only downfall?: *see previous statement*

Now, after this week’s episode, I’m sure most fans of the show hate Shane for killing Otis. I, on the other hand, found it attractive that he was willing to do whatever was necessary to save Carl. Plus, there is something beyond sexy about watching him completely unhinged, shirtless, and shaving his head.

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

My body is ready.

So, readers: It’s your turn. Would you really mind the zombie apocalypse all that much if Jon Bernthal was by your side?

I think I’d be oddly okay with it.

In fact, I thought of the perfect pick-up line for Mr. Bernthal. “You, sir, might just be a visual zombie. Every time I see you, I die. Then, I come back with a ravenous desire to put you in my mouth.”

Whoa. Too much?

I regret nothing.

Man Meat Monday #31

As most of you know, I am nocturnal. So, I fill my nights blogging and watching shows on the DVR. Sometimes, I run out of things to do, so I flip through the channels. Last week, I was lucky enough to catch a particularly attractive episode of Biography. So, this week, I bring you...

George Clooney

Claim to Fame: Actor (Ocean's movies, Michael Clayton, Ides of March)

Birthday: May 6, 1961

I don't care if George is a stereotypical choice. He's also the natural, human choice. Resistance is futile.

Born in Georgetown, Kentucky, George grew up near Cincinnati (hometown points), was a huge Reds fan (he even tried out for the team!), and went to Northern Kentucky University for a bit. After realizing his athletic career was over, he decided to move to Hollywood, where he lived with his aunt while trying to find spots on various TV shows and canceled pilots. He finally got his big break, of course, as Dr. Doug Ross on ER.

Despite a couple major movie flops (*cough* Batman & Robin *cough*), George's resume is impressive, including Oscar nominations for his roles in Michael Clayton and Up in the Air and an Oscar win for Syriana. He has also proven himself to be a capable director, taking on passion projects, such as Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and Good Night and Good Luck, and bringing them to the silver screen.

I could go on for days about how gorgeous he is, but People Magazine has already voted him Sexiest Man Alive. Twice. So, that should do it. I do, however, feel compelled to mention his humanitarian work, particularly in Darfur. Instead of simply donating money to the cause, he has raised awareness by traveling to Chad and Sudan to film documentaries and see what else he could physically do there. He has also done a lot of work for the families of the victims' of 9/11 and Haiti. Sexiest Man Alive, smart, talented, political, and a big heart? It's just not fair.

Random Tidbit: For his Oscar-winning role in Syriana, George gained 35 pounds. During the filming of a torture scene, he suffered a spinal cord injury that required surgery to correct and still has residual effects. Committed much?

Only downfall?: He has been very clear that he will never get married again. This, of course, implies that I'm disappointed because I thought I stood a chance. How cute.

This is old, but he's hilarious. Did I mention he's handsome?

So, readers: It's your turn. Would you fake respiratory arrest for some CPR from George Clooney?

I'd certainly try. He may not be a doctor, but he definitely played one on TV.

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

That time I won a contest that I didn't enter.

Probably to no one's surprise, I saw The Ides of March on opening night. My anticipation for the movie was through the roof - I love political melodrama, the movie was filmed all around Ohio, and everyone loves George Clooney and Ryan Gosling. It didn't disappoint. Really, I suggest everyone goes to see it. It is a thought-provoking commentary on human loyalty and honesty, not only in the political realm, but in life. It explores the often self-serving world of politics through a very cynical lens, depicting the failure and eventual corruption of an idealistic campaign staffer with all the right intentions (Gosling) in an environment that is far too wrought with insincerity and deceit to accomplish anything worthwhile. This, of course, is a perfect allegory for the betrayal of Julius Caesar by Marcus Brutus on the "ides of March," March 15, 44 BC.

Gosling was incredible (as usual), George directed it beautifully, and Paul Giamatti and Philip Seymour Hoffman acted with all the capability we've seen in their roles from the past. With solid performances from Evan Rachel Wood, Marisa Tomei, and Max Minghella, I left the theater disturbed, yet strangely satisfied.

Like I said, the movie takes place on the campaign trail in my home state of Ohio, where Pennsylvania Governor Mike Morris is fighting to win a hotly-contested democratic primary and the bid for president. I loved seeing places I recognize throughout the film. Some scenes were filmed at my alma mater Miami University (and some of my friends were extras!). Last year, I ventured to Oxford in hopes of keeping finding George, Ryan, and/or Max. Of course, I left slightly disappointed, but I did find the movie's campaign bus!

Throughout the movie, you can see Farmer Business School, the Ohio River, the Millennium Hotel (in downtown Cincinnati), Paul Brown Stadium, and Newport (Kentucky). They mentioned a ton of other Ohio colleges, including Ohio State, UC, Kent State, and Xavier.

Despite all the hometown excitement, there was one scene in the movie that got me particularly excited. In a pivotal scene in which Ryan Gosling meets secretly with Paul Giamatti at a sports bar, I noticed a framed Rick Nash jersey hanging on the wall. This, of course, is highly unrealistic because no one in Cincinnati cares about Blue Jackets hockey or knows who Rick Nash is. After fangirling a bit and annoying Jenn, I decided to tweet the Columbus Blue Jackets to tell them about the small cameo for the captain.

One day later, I received a tweet from Nirva Milord, the NHL Director of Entertainment Publicity (@NHLnlm):

Apparently, he had contacted the Blue Jackets announcing a contest that would give a prize to the first fan who tweeted about the Nash jersey in the scene. Being the creep I am, I noticed and tweeted about it before the contest was announced. So, I won! ....a contest that I didn't know existed. I love Twitter.

Today, I got my prize! An official NHL puck signed by none other than my future husband, Rick Nash. Seriously, all of these run-ins must be more than coincidence, right?

Just another thing for the shrine. Next time I see him, I'll try to collect a lock of his hair.

Is it just me or should I be playing the lottery these days?

Man Meat Monday #30

This week, I decided to get back to basics and give you the most shallow slice of Man Meat...possibly ever. So, without further ado, I bring you...

Steve Jones

Claim to Fame: Host of The X Factor USA

Birthday: March 16, 1977

I'm not going to lie to you. I don't know very much about this guy. I know he's from Wales, he's 6'4", he used to be a model, he hosts my new favorite TV show (although he isn't very good at it), and, perhaps most importantly, he looks like that.

See what I mean? Shallow choice. Hey - I'm entitled to this every now and then. The segment is called Man Meat Monday.

Random Tidbit: Apparently, he has dated Pamela Anderson and Hayden Panettiere.

Only downfall?: He wears a pinky ring. Why don't all guys realize that pinky rings are a no-no?

Every single time it shows him on X Factor, I make a comment about how gorgeous he is. This, of course, means that no one likes watching the show with me, anymore.

Yes.

So, readers: It's your turn. Am I the only one who wishes he was the host of a show called XXX Factor?

I might just audition next season so that I can cry on his shoulder when the judges send me home.

Man Meat Monday #29

I am way, way overdue for one of these. With the start of hockey season and the premiere of Ides of March, I have a myriad of candidates to choose from this week. However, I've decided to serve up a random slice of Man Meat with...

Seth MacFarlane

Claim to Fame: Animator (creater of Family Guy, American Dad, The Cleveland Show)

Birthday: October 26, 1973

In full disclosure, I've had a love thing for Seth MacFarlane for a long time now. Family Guy is, without a doubt, one of my favorite shows and Seth is the mastermind behind it. He pitched the idea for Family Guy to execs while working for Hanna-Barbera on a show called Johnny Bravo (Do the monkey!). It didn't take long for Hanna-Barbera to realize the show was a bit too controversial for them (understatement), so Seth talked to Fox and the rest is history.

Not only did Seth create the show, draw the characters, and write the script, but he also provides the voice for Peter, Stewie, Brian, and Quagmire. For those who don't know much about him, Seth MacFarlane is basically a human, live-action version of the character Brian. Brian's voice is Seth's normal talking voice. He is liberal, atheist, supports gay rights and the legalization of marijuana, plays the piano, and sings like Frank Sinatra. Seriously. He just released a CD of fully-orchestrated show tunes from the '40s and '50s. *swoon*

He also serves as the Roastmaster for most Comedy Central roasts. Between him and Anthony Jeselnik, I needed a Stewie-style diaper during the roasts of Donald Trump and Charlie Sheen.

Random Tidbit: Seth was supposed to be on one of the flights that crashed into the Twin Towers on September 11th. However, due to a bit of a hangover and an incorrect departure time, he missed his flight.

Only downfall?: According to my research, he once dated Amanda Bynes. On the upside, she is my age...so that means I have a chance.

So, readers: It's your turn. Could you put up with all the different voices?

Although I seem to suffer from life-long Meg Syndrome, I think I'd even tolerate Quagmire beside me in bed if it meant dinner, a movie, and a midnight serenade from Mr. MacFarlane.

Man Meat Monday #27

Since I'm actually a gleeky tween at heart, I went to the Glee 3D movie at midnight on Thursday. No, not alone, you creeps.

I've been going through serious Glee withdrawal, so I couldn't wait any longer. The movie was incredible. I literally could not stop smiling and singing along. I admit I have a crush on just about every guy involved with Glee. However, there was one in particular that I loved seeing in three dimensions. Any excuse to have him closer to my mouth...

Darren Criss

This isn't giving me any ideas.

Claim to Fame: Actor (Glee)

Birthday: February 5, 1987

I'm not sure how to say this any other way: Darren Criss is flawless. Here's the proof:

- He is a musical prodigy. We've all heard his incredible voice. He's also a classically trained violinist, plays the piano, drums, and guitar, and writes his own songs.

- He speaks Italian. Let me repeat that. He speaks Italian.

- Have you seen his face?

- He loves Disney songs - possibly more than I do. He has a ton of youtube videos where he covers classics from Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, and The Little Mermaid. Check them out. Your heart will melt.

- Obviously, he's a great actor. He is a straight guy, comfortable enough in his own sexuality to play a more-than-convincing gay teenager.

- Speaking of Glee, he is an incredible role model for gay teenagers (and adults!) and a champion of gay rights. *swoon*

- Have you seen his face?

- In interviews, he seems so down-to-earth and humble.

- He loves Harry Potter. As a student at the University of Michigan, he co-founded a theater production company called Team StarKid. While there, he wrote the music for A Very Potter Musical and A Very Potter Sequel and starred as Harry Potter in the productions. These musicals are hilarious and so well made. If you love Harry Potter as much as I do, watch them on youtube.

- Have you seen his face?

Random Tidbit: Continuing the trend of following Harry Potter in his career, Darren is set to replace Daniel Radcliffe in the Broadway revival of How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. Trip to NYC anyone?

Only downfall?: After an hour of thinking, it suddenly hit me. He graduated from the University of Michigan. As a huge Buckeye fan, this isn't necessarily a dealbreaker, but it does pose a potential problem in November. Sidenote: In one episode of Glee, Blaine talks about Ohio State football, thereby making Darren perfect.

...and that, my friends, is how a youtube video impregnates you.

So, readers: It's your turn. Do you find Darren supermegafoxyawesomehot?

...because even though I lack the proper anatomy, I may audition for the Warblers next year just to see him everyday. Plus, those blazers are to die for.

Man Meat Monday #24

During tonight's episode of True Blood, I realized something. Alcide Herveaux is hot. Really, really hot. Louisiana-in-July hot.

This week, the wonderful people at HBO told Alcide to undress slowly, taunting us with his chiseled body and V-shaped man lines, then challenge Eric to an epic ab contest. So, after a very cold shower, I bring you...

Joe Manganiello

Claim to Fame: Actor (True Blood, One Tree Hill)

Birthday: December 28, 1976

Here is the thing - I don't know much about Mr. Manganiello. Here's what I can find: He's from Pittsburgh (GO PENS!). He's 6'5". He plays Bon Temps's most attractive werewolf on True Blood. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon with a BFA in acting. He looks like this:

That is truly all you need to know.

Random Tidbit: He sings backup vocals on "Hospital" by The Used.

Only downfall?: He, too, is engaged to a model. Oh yeah - he's also a huge Steelers' fan. Deal-breaker.

Please, just ignore Anna Paquin.

So, readers: It's your turn. Would you let Alcide be your six pack leader?

...because after seeing this, I'm addicted to a whole different kind of V.
