Something to Say!!!

Every once in awhile, I actually do something fun during the weekend and I like to blog about it for memory purposes. This is one of those posts.

As I've said before, I still haven't completely come to terms with the fact that I'm no longer a student at Miami University. So, on Thursday (which was also Jenn's 24th birthday!), we went to Miami for Green Beer Day. If you don't know, GBD is basically Miami's annual equivalent of a St. Patrick's Day celebration...times 100. It has been mentioned by multiple national news sources and is complete with customized shirts, news crews running around, celebrity appearances (this year - Three 6 Mafia, last year - Ying Yang Twins, George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Phillip Seymour Hoffman), and you guessed it - unlimited green beer. Although I don't drink, Green Beer Day also happens to be my own personal Jack Dawson. I will never let it go.

We woke up at 4:00 AM to get ready and headed to Brick Street for some dancing by 5:30. We reunited with our beloved CJ and her lovely housemates Emily and Katie for some green beer, shamrock juice, "The Cupid Shuffle," and our usual GBD shenanigans. CJ also did an impressive, elaborate Irish dance in the middle of the dance floor that had every single person in the bar staring at her in awe and recording her on their cellphones. Typical behavior.

After Brick Street, Jenn and I headed to Mac & Joe's for a bit before getting lunch (at 9:00 AM?) at BW3s. Oxford, Ohio truly is a tiny slice of heaven on earth.

Friday, we were supposed to head to Louisville for Jenn's birthday extravaganza. However, our plans were canceled with the news of the horrific tornadoes moving through the tri-state area. Although we were bummed about the change of plans, we were extremely lucky in Ohio. I'm so grateful we didn't attempt the drive during the storms and my heart goes out to all of the victims. Instead, we filled the night with Mexican food, glitter showers for Jenn, tequila shots, cake, and good friends.

Today, I went to my former housemate Kristin's baby shower. She is due to have baby Charlotte in a few weeks and I absolutely can't wait to meet her! As usual, it was wonderful to see her and most of my housemates!

Other random thoughts over the weekend:

- I've mentioned before that Sidney Crosby looks exactly like Andy Samberg. Well, on Saturday Night Live this weekend, Lindsay Lohan called Andy Samberg 'Sidney Crosby' in a skit and I still haven't recovered. Now, my ultimate fantasy is for Andy to play Sid in a skit.

- The Walking Dead absolutely blew my mind this week. It truly is the best show on television. I cannot get over the depth of the characters and the philosophical and psychological battles they wage every week. The zombies really are a secondary factor on the show. I have an absolutely horrible, foreboding feeling that Shane is going to die in the season finale in two weeks. If so, I will need more than a few words of consolation. Prepare yourselves accordingly.

- Yesterday, I saw an incredible advertisement for the You Can Play Project. I've written about my fellow Miami classmate Brendan Burke and the courageous steps he took when he publicly came out as gay and became the closest person associated with any major sport in the U.S. to do so. Since his heartbreaking death in 2010, his amazing family has continued his efforts to make the athletic community (and particularly the hockey community) an accepting environment for gay athletes. When I saw this advertisement, filled with star hockey players like Rick Nash, Claude Giroux, and Henrik Lundqvist, my eyes instantly filled with tears. Brendan would have been so unbelievably proud because his dream of equality is slowly becoming a reality. I feel so lucky to have had his influence, however briefly, in my life.

As you can see, this weekend reminded me, yet again, how blessed I am.

  1. I'm so very glad you came to GBD. You better never let go, because I don't think I could do a GBD without you. And you comparing it to Jack Dawson is still one of the funniest, and truest things, I've ever heard. I'm so sorry your plans for Louisville fell through, but glad you got to reunite with your housemates! Can't wait until the next time we're together!

  2. AHHHHHH, GBD. I want to go back to Oxford next year and celebrate it. I actually ended up in Louisville with a bunch of Miami alumni, so that was fun! I will be home next week for spring break. I have a lot of work to do, but maybe we can have a jeopardy night or alcapulco or something?
