Life in a Bubble

Oh, this poor blog. Always the first thing to go when life gets crazy.

Wheat and I recently returned from our glorious honeymoon, which was spent gallivanting the streets of Boston, London, Amsterdam, Munich, and Cologne. We saw so many incredible things, walked our feet off, ate more than enough to compensate for the exercise, and generally felt lucky to be in love with each other. It was truly awesome. Full recaps - when I figure out the best way to execute them - are coming, which is hilarious because I still haven't blogged about our wedding. Oops.

However, the weekend before we set off on our two-week European adventure, we welcomed my three best girlfriends to town for a fun 5K and some quality time. Nothing presses my reset button better than time spent with these three girls and, despite the chaos of packing and cleaning, their visit was exactly what I needed before my big trip.

In full disclosure, most of the weekend was spent eating at various places around Indy (my favorite pastime), but the main event was the Bubble Run on Saturday morning. After going to bed entirely too late on Friday night, we miraculously roused ourselves early enough to get to the State Fairgrounds in time for our 8:00 AM start time. With temporary tattoos, headbands, and race bibs in place, we set off through the first batch of clear bubbles that marked the starting line.

Throughout the race, we ran through four more bubble stations, each a different color. The bubbles, which initially felt refreshing in the morning heat, festively tie-dyed our shirts and stained our skin. I shrieked like a child as I made my way under the bubble blowers, running through mountains of bubbles, some of which were taller than me. The course wound throughout the fairgrounds and we were able to watch horses and drivers practice on the track throughout the race. Wheat finished first, followed by Sib and Morgan, while Jenn and I brought up the rear.

At the finish line, we celebrated in the "bubble pit," where staff members periodically shot bubble cannons onto the crowd of participants. It was muddy, sticky, and kinda gross, but it sure made for some cute pictures. Needless to say, we all desperately needed a date with a shower and washing machine.

Instead of showering after the race, however, we went straight to the mecca of all burgers - Bru Burger - because our priorities are straight. The rest of the day/night was filled with more girl talk (sorry, Wheat!), naps, and even a little barhopping. How unbelievably cute is the drink tray shaped like Indiana down there?!

...and I never thought I'd say this, but I'm actually looking into other fun 5Ks for the future. I know I'll never be a runner or even remotely competitive in these events, but it was a pretty great excuse to spend some time with friends, get myself moving, and get out of bed before noon. Oh, and the whole burger-as-your-reward thing didn't hurt, either. Have you done any fun 5Ks that you'd recommend?

  5. We did the bubble run last year and it was fun. done the color run a few times, it's always cool. Did the Fro-yo one this year - so much fun - plus fro-yo at the end! Although it was the most difficult course they do they said - seriously SO hilly!
